Esther Dyson
Editor for Release 1.0 - CNET Networks
Esther Dyson is editor at large at CNET Networks, where she is editor of its monthly newsletter Release 1.0 and leader of its annual PC Forum, the IT industry's leading executive conference. As editor at large, she also contributes insight and content to CNET Networks' other properties. She sold her business, EDventure Holdings, to CNET Networks in early 2004. Previously, she had co-owned EDventure and written/edited Release 1.0 since 1983. Dyson also recently moderated CNET Networks'/Download.com's Anti-Spyware Workshop, which moved the marketing industry forward in its attempts to deal with spyware, much as this Authentication Summit will help us deal with spam. At Release 1.0 and in her private investment activities, Dyson focuses on emerging technologies, emerging companies and emerging markets (including Russia). Among the topics she has covered for Release 1.0 have been both spam ("The Accountable Net," November 2004, new developments in mail ("Meta-Mail," June 2004) and identity management (June and July, 2003). She was an early investor in Brightmail and is currently an investor in Dotomi, which provides a Web-based alternative to e-mail for direct-to-individual messages.Dyson is also an active player in discussions and policy-making concerning the Internet and society, and is a member of the Markle Task Force on National Security in the Information Age. From 1998 to 2000, she was founding chairman of ICANN (the organization responsible for setting policy for the Domain Name System). A variety of government officials worldwide turn to her for advice on Internet and small-business policy issues.


Eric Allman
Chief Technology Officer - Sendmail
As Sendmail's chief technology officer and co-founder, Eric Allman leads the company's technology strategy and developments. Allman authored sendmail, the world's first Internet Mail program, in 1981 while at the University of California at Berkeley. He continues to spearhead sendmail.org, the global team of volunteers that maintain and support the sendmail Open Source platform. Before joining Sendmail, Allman served as CTO for Sift, Inc., which is now part of 24/7 Media, Inc. He was lead developer and provided a large-scale research software infrastructure on the Mammoth project at U.C. Berkeley. Allman has contributed as a senior developer at the International Computer Science Institute to neural network systems design. Allman was also Chief Programmer on the INGRES Relational Database Management System and an early contributor to Berkeley UNIX, authoring syslog, tset, the troff -me macros, and trek in addition to sendmail. For several years, he has co-authored the "C Advisor" column for UNIX Review magazine. He was formerly a member of the Board of Directors of USENIX Association and is currently a member of the ACM Queue Editorial Review Board. Allman holds an MS degree in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley.


Des Cahill
Chief Executive Officer - Habeas Inc.
Des Cahill has transformed California-based Habeas from a company best known for haiku poetry to the company that is building the infrastructure for legitimate email. His background includes marketing, sales and operations experience at some of America's best-known technology companies (Apple Computer, America Online, Netscape) and successful stints at some high-profile start-ups (Autonomy, BridgeSpan and eFax.com). Prior to joining Habeas, Cahill was with BridgeSpan, a Benchmark-Sequoia real-estate services firm where he directed marketing, business and corporate development activities. Des is well known on the email and anti-spam speaker circuit, and is an acknowledged authority on sender accreditation and reputation. He advises senders on how to establish their email reputation, and receivers on how to adopt technologies to improve their ability to cost-effectively and reliably process email streams. He is an evangelist for accountability in email.


Al DiGuido
Chief Executive Officer - Bigfoot Interactive
Long recognized as one of the direct response industry's premier innovators and a pioneer in email communications, Al DiGuido brings 20 years of marketing, sales, management and operations expertise to his role as Chief Executive Officer of Bigfoot Interactive. As the former CEO of Expression Engines, Al assumed the leadership role at Bigfoot Interactive in 2001 during a merger of the two companies that yielded one of the most advanced email technology platforms on the market today. Al's dynamic leadership has secured the company's status as a pacesetter for strategic thought in email campaign development and industry-specific marketing automation technologies. Al actively participates in industry-shaping initiatives through his involvement in the Direct Marketing Association, where he was most recently appointed to the DMA Ethics Policy Committee. He is a regular contributing columnist for ClickZ and is an accomplished speaker, frequently presenting at high-profile forums such as the DMA/AIM Net.Marketing Conference, @d:tech and the DMA Annual Conference.


Jeff Dossett

General Manager - Technology - Microsoft Corp.
As general manager of the Technology Care and Safety Group, Jeff Dossett is responsible for product management, planning and marketing for Microsoft’s broad efforts to support enhanced online safety for consumers and businesses from a variety of emerging online risks such as spam, phishing, ID theft, child exploitation and malware such as viruses and spyware. In this role, Dossett provides senior leadership to Microsoft’s holistic approach to improving online safety including technology innovation, prescriptive guidance and responsible leadership through proactive industry collaboration and partnerships. In addition, Dossett oversees product management, consumer marketing, channel development and customer satisfaction for Windows OneCare, Microsoft’s comprehensive consumer subscription service that will provide automated protection, maintenance and performance tuning as an all-in-one consumer experience for Windows-based PCs. Dossett joined Microsoft in 1991 and has served in a variety of senior sales and marketing roles, including General Manager of Microsoft Canada, General Manager of the Internet Customer Unit where he led business development focused on establishing technology and service relationships with major global network operators. In 2000, Dossett joined MSN providing business strategy and development leadership to MSN’s leading e-commerce services. He then served as CEO of MSN Autos and General Manager of MSN House & Home. In 2002, Dossett invested 2 years away from Microsoft to pursue his passion for adventure and became the 3rd Canadian in history to complete the “Seven Summits”, reaching the summit of the highest peak on each continent, including Mount Everest on May 24th, 2004. Dossett holds an Honors Business Administration degree from the Richard Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario

Thomas X. Grasso, Jr.
Special Agent - FBI
Tom Grasso began working with computers in 1993 as a network administrator. In 1998 Mr. Grasso received an appointment to the position of Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). After attending new agents training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, Mr. Grasso was transferred to the FBI's Chicago Field Office where he was assigned to the Regional Computer Crime Squad. In the fall of 2000, Mr. Grasso was transferred to the FBI's Pittsburgh Field Office and assigned to the High Technology Crimes Task Force where he served as the FBI Liaison to the Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center (CERT/CC) at Carnegie Mellon University. Mr. Grasso is now part of the Cyber Division at FBI Headquarters and is assigned to the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA) in Pittsburgh, a joint partnership between law enforcement, academia, and industry. Mr. Grasso is a 1991 graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he majored in Geological Sciences and minored in Music.


Jim Fenton
Cisco Distinguished Engineer - Cisco Systems
Jim Fenton is a Distinguished Engineer in Cisco's Security Technology Group (STG). Mr. Fenton is responsible for defining a number of new initiatives relating to router-based security, which encompasses technologies such as firewall, intrusion detection, address translation, and encryption. He is also the lead architect for Identified Internet Mail, a proposal for cryptographic signatures messages to counter fraudulent email. In previous roles at Cisco, Mr. Fenton has managed development efforts relating to VoIP features for service providers, store-and-forward fax, and was a key member of the team that established Cisco in the dial access market. Mr. Fenton has worked closely with a number of high-profile customers to ensure their success in complex system deployments. Mr. Fenton came to Cisco from the acquisition of Combinet, Inc., where he was Director of Technology and drove the introduction of IP and IPX routing to Combinet's products. Prior to that, Mr. Fenton was Manager, Software Engineering Department at Watkins-Johnson Company where he directed the development of control and processing software for receiver systems used in government applications. Mr. Fenton is a past President and Board Chair of Schola Cantorum, a local 120-member choral group. Mr. Fenton has Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.


John Greco
President & Chief Executive Officer - The DMA
John A. Greco, Jr., is president and CEO of The DMA. Prior to this appointment in August 2004, John held marketing positions at RCA Company and AT&T, including five years as director of the latter's Consumer Laboratory Center of Excellence at AT&T Bell Laboratories, which did extensive work understanding the early applications of the Internet, home networks, wireless devices, and interactive TV. Between 1996 and 2000, John served as a marketing executive at R.R. Donnelley. From 2000 to 2003, he served as president and CEO of the Yellow Pages Integrated Media Association. Following that, he co-founded Greco Enterprises LLC, a family holding company based in Watchung, NJ, that included Greco Associates, a marketing, business development, and association management services company. John holds an MBA from Columbia University and a B.S. in electronic engineering from Monmouth University.


Trevor Hughes, Esq., CIPP
Executive Director - ESPC
J. Trevor Hughes is an attorney specializing in ecommerce, privacy and technology law. Hughes serves as the Executive Director of the Network Advertising Initiative (the NAI) and the International Association of Privacy Professionals (the IAPP). In his role with the NAI, Hughes leads the NAI's efforts to create manageable standards for industry at the intersection of privacy and technology. He leads the NAI's Email Service Provider Coalition, an organization that is dedicated to developing technological and public policy tools to reduce spam and protect legitimate email. In his role with the IAPP, Hughes leads the world's largest association of privacy professionals.


Erik Johnson
VP, Program Manager : E-mail Infrastructure & Secure Messaging - Bank of America
Erik Johnson is the E-mail Infrastructure and Secure Messaging Program Manager at Bank of America (BAC). He is the project manager for Sender Authentication and also leads or provides oversight for other projects related to e-mail hygiene, security, infrastructure and regulatory compliance efforts. Erik Joined BAC from FleetBoston Financial, where he was the lead architect responsible for designing and implementing enterprise messaging and collaboration solutions. Prior to working at Fleet/BAC he worked as a principal consultant with The Charlton Group, a boutique consulting firm, by providing business technology solutions specializing in messaging technologies to Fortune 1000 companies in the New England area. He was instrumental in helping The Charlton Group achieve recognition as a member of Deloitte & Touche's Technology Fast 500 in 1998. Erik has 17 years experience helping companies leverage technology solutions to meet business needs.


Harry Katz
Program Manager, Technology Care and Safety Group - Microsoft Corp.
Harry Katz is a program manager with the Technology Care and Safety Group at Microsoft. Harry has most recently been driving Sender ID, an industry-wide approach to dealing with the problem of email spoofing and phishing. Previously Harry was responsible for the email hygiene capabilities of Exchange Server. Since joining Microsoft 7 years ago, he has also worked on Exchange connectors and developer tools, working closely with all stakeholders throughout the email ecosystem including email administrators and the IETF. Prior to Microsoft, Harry worked as a project manager with LinkAge Software on a variety of email gateway and directory synchronization products. Harry has a Bachelor of Mathematics in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo.


Eric Kirby
Senior Vice President and General Manager - Email Solutions - DoubleClick Inc.
Eric serves as Senior Vice President and General Manager for Email Solutions where he is responsible for the overall business direction of the division. Prior to his current role, Eric was Vice President for DoubleClick's Strategic Services Group where he oversaw a team of marketing strategists and analysts. His work crossed product areas and industries within DoubleClick's client base and enabled companies to develop innovative solutions to marketing problems. Before joining DoubleClick, Eric was the CEO and co-founder of Veripost, an email marketing tools provider, where he guided the company's business development, marketing, service implementation and financing activities before its merger with Return Path in October 2001. Eric was also a co-founder of Assurance Systems, a company focused on developing email deliverability tools and now also part of Return Path.


Matt Leonard
Director, Privacy and Information Policy - Harte Hanks
Matt Leonard leads all privacy and information policy activity at Harte-Hanks, a worldwide provider of direct and targeted marketing solutions, serving both consumer and business-to-business markets. In this role, Leonard leads an internal Privacy and Compliance Committee (PCC) comprised of experienced contacts in international, public relations, lists and data, and legal affairs. Prior to Harte-Hanks, Leonard served at IBM where he was responsible for a variety of privacy and policy related activities associated with customer information, among them the creation and operation of a Global E-mail Cleansing service. He also led the team that wrote and implemented the Corporate E-mail guidelines as well as ongoing updates of IBM notice and choice and permission practices. Matt has more than 25 years' experience in the direct marketing field, and holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. He is an executive committee member of both the Center for Information Policy Leadership and the Responsible Information Management consortium (part of the Ponemon Institute).


Miles Libby
Product Manager - Yahoo! Inc.
Miles Libbey is a Product Manager at Yahoo! Inc. where he leads Yahoo! Mail's anti-spam initiatives. Libbey is responsible for the effectiveness of the SpamGuard filtering technology as well as oversees development and implementation of all anti-spam features. As Yahoo! Mail's anti-spam specialist, Libbey is charged with fostering Yahoo!'s commitment to providing its users with the safest and most secure messaging experience available. During his tenure at Yahoo!, Libbey has helped to launch a variety of initiatives for Yahoo! Mail including enhanced SpamGuard in March 2003 and Yahoo! Mail's first re-design in June 2002. Miles has also been instrumental in the implementation of Yahoo!'s DomainKeys e-mail authentication technology. DomainKeys is a technology proposal that gives email providers a mechanism for verifying both the domain of each email sender and the integrity of the messages sent, offering an additional level of protection against phishing and other forms of fraudulent attacks. DomainKeys leverages public/private key cryptography to verify the sender of e-mail messages at the domain level.


Patrick Peterson
Vice President of Technology - IronPort Systems
Patrick Peterson is Vice President of Technology at IronPort Systems. He began at IronPort performing market research and product definition for the email infrastructure products that have become IronPort's Email Security Appliances and was instrumental in the creation of SenderBase, the industry's first and largest email traffic monitoring service. Prior to joining IronPort Systems, Peterson held engineering and marketing management positions at Savi Technology, including managing the Engineering and Manufacturing departments as Vice President, Engineering Operations. Peterson played a critical role during the sale of the company to Texas Instruments and also in winning a $111 million competitively bid logistics contract. Peterson holds bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from Stanford University and holds patents related to antennas, radio frequency communications and email authentication techniques.


Vipul Ved Prakash
Chief Scientist and Founder - Cloudmark
Vipul Ved Prakash is a well known computer scientist and software engineer. A quintessential innovator, Vipul has repeatedly turned popular wisdom on its head to create clever solutions to hard problems. At the age of 18 he founded Sense/Net, a company that bootstrapped Internet connectivity in India by creating an unconventional meta-network of IP tunnels. In 1998, he created "Vipul's Razor", the world's first collaborative spam filtration network, now known as SafetyBar and developed at Cloudmark. SafetyBar has attracted more than a million users, garnered international acclaim and won several coveted industry awards, including PC World's World Class Award 2004 and PC Magazine's Editor's Choice for its accuracy. Prior to Cloudmark, Vipul held senior engineering, research and consulting positions at Napster, Silicon Graphics, NIIT, PacificNet, BPL and Infocom. A prolific contributor to the Open Source/Free Software movement, Vipul has authored software for cryptography, number theory, networking, object concurrency, and intelligent scheduling, many of which are included with popular Linux and BSD distributions. Vipul is also a co-author of the "Oribiten Free Software Survey", an EU-sponsored project that was the first successful effort to build a comprehensive empirical model of OS/F participation. The tools and methodologies developed in that survey have become seminal in the emerging field of trans-monetary economics. Vipul is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and academic events on the issues of computing and spam. In 2003, MIT's Technology Review named him as one of the Top 100 Young Innovators in the World.


John L. Scarrow
General Manager, Anti-Spam and Anti-Phishing Strategy Team, Technology Care and Safety Group - Microsoft Corp.
As general manager of the Anti-Spam and Anti-Phishing Strategy Team within the Technology Care and Safety Group at Microsoft Corp., John L. Scarrow is responsible for driving Microsoft's anti-spam and anti-phishing strategy and technology development. Scarrow's team works closely with other groups across the company to integrate anti-spam and anti-phishing technologies into Microsoft® products and services to ensure that the company maintains its leadership position in the fight against the improper or criminal use of the Internet. The team takes a multifaceted approach that includes technology, user education, legislation, leadership and litigation. Scarrow came to Microsoft in 1992 as a program manager, and since that time has held diverse roles throughout the MSN services and the Windows division. As general manager of MSN.com and MSNBC.com, Scarrow oversaw a complex reorganization process that consolidated MSN® media properties and streamlined the organization to improve the customer experience. During that time he was on the board of directors for MSNBC and managed efforts for contributing MSN products such as MSN Autos, MSN Money, MSN Investor and a host of other media sites. As a general manager, Scarrow also was instrumental in the creation of the eHome division, most commonly known as the division responsible for the Windows® Media Center. Across the company, Scarrow is well known as a no-nonsense leader with a history of shipping complex products and services. Before coming to Microsoft, Scarrow worked for Oki Data Americas Inc., where he helped develop patented technology that led to the first low-cost laser printers. Scarrow holds a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Davis, where he was inducted into the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. In his spare time, Scarrow enjoys golf, motocross, autos, high-speed power boats and coaching his children's soccer teams.


Ken Schneider
Chief Architect, Network and Gateway Security Solutions  - Symantec Corporation
Ken Schneider serves as chief architect, Network and Gateway Security Solutions, where he drives the group?s technology roadmap, system architecture, and key technology partnerships related to the network and gateway security businesses. He is also responsible for the overall network and gateway security technology strategy. Prior to joining Symantec, Ken served as CTO and VP of Operations of Brightmail, the leading anti-spam software company that was successfully acquired by Symantec. Before Brightmail, Ken founded and was president of South Beach Software, a software company that developed international language and paint system products for the professional video market.  Prior to that, Ken was an independent software consultant for clients such as Sun Microsystems, Digital Equipment Corporation and Tektronix. He has also held engineering positions at Integrated Systems and at the John Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.


Craig Spiezle
Director of Business & Industry Strategy for the Technology Care and Safety Group - Microsoft Corp.
As Director of Business & Industry Strategy for the Technology Care and Safety Group at Microsoft Corp., Craig Spiezle is responsible for coordinating Microsoft's broad Internet safety efforts to address issues such as anti-spam and anti-phishing for enterprise customers and consumers through a holistic approach to technology, standards, public policy and enforcement. In this role, Spiezle manages the company's involvement with industry working groups, industry partners and governmental agencies. Prior to this role he served as the director of emerging markets, pioneering the Microsoft Senior Initiative, a worldwide program committed to bridging the digital and generational divides by providing computer access and training to people of all ages and bringing communities together through the use of technology. Starting with Microsoft in 1992, Spiezle has held various managerial positions including international channel development, OEM licensing and product support services, where he led product launches, business development and technology partnerships while creating and implementing channel segmentation strategies. Spiezle hold a BS in Photographic Sciences from Rochester Institute of Technology, and an MBA from Seattle University.


Ken Takahashi
Senior Director, Email Delivery Management - DoubleClick Email Solutions
Ken Takahashi is the Senior Director of Email Delivery Management for DoubleClick Email Solutions. In this role, he is responsible for all aspects of email deliverability at DoubleClick. His global team, located throughout North America, Europe and the Asia Pacific regions are responsible for managing day-to-day client delivery challenges, operational policies and procedures, product direction, as well as overseeing the company's strategic relationships with major Internet Service Providers. Ken brings more than 7 years of unique experience in client relations, technology and business to his current role. He joined DoubleClick via the MessageMedia acquisition where he served as Regional Manager for client integration initiatives. Previously, Ken also held positions at Hachette Filipacchi Media and VNU/Claritas. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University and is a frequent industry speaker and contributor to leading publications.


John Thielens
Chief Technology Officer - Tumbleweed
John serves as CTO, overseeing the Tumbleweed research team. John has over 7 years of experience in product management and professional services with Worldtalk, Valicert, and Tumbleweed technologies. John's prior experience includes more than 10 years in software development with IBM and Unisys. John holds an A.B. in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University.








Shar VanBoskirk
Consulting Analyst - Forrester
Shar is a part of Forrester’s Devices, Media, & Marketing team, which is focused on helping clients develop integrated marketing strategies through written research and custom client projects. Her areas of emphasis include email marketing, market mix planning and modeling, and rich media and broadband advertising. Shar returns to Forrester after several years away working in marketing strategy consulting. Most recently, Shar served as research director for marketing research boutique, TideWatch, where she led internal strategy efforts and client strategy projects. She also worked as a strategy consultant with Carlson Marketing Group developing CRM and email strategies for clients including Home Depot, British Airways, and Buena Vista Home Entertainment. Shar began her career at Forrester in 1997 during the early days of the Internet and has written research on email marketing, customer loyalty and retention, ad networks, and marketing measurement. Shar graduated with honors from Harvard University.


Jim Voros
Director and Technical Architect - News Corporation
Jim Voros is the Technical Architect for News Corporation's Corporate Headquarters. News Corporation is a leader in creating and delivering news, sports and entertainment around the world and is listed on the Fortune 500. Since joining News Corporation in 1996, Jim has been instrumental in designing and implementing their enterprise infrastructure. In his role, he is also responsible for the Messaging environment, overseeing its security as well as managing the company's global messaging capabilities. Jim is also dedicated to improving the company's worldwide communications in addition to increasing awareness of mail security and anti-spam opportunities. Recently certified in ITIL, he is implementing their best practices to all Corporate IT services and processes to improve the department's ability to execute. Jim holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Iowa State University and is currently
a member of the New York City CTO Club.

Meng Weng Wong is the lead developer of Sender Policy Framework (SPF) and founder of Pobox.com.  As one of the leading anti spam authentication schemes, SPF is used by companies such as AOL, Earthlink, SAP and supported by anti spam companies such as Sophos, Symantec, Brightmail, IronPort, Ciphertrust, MailArmory, MailFrontier, Roaring Penguin Software, and Communigate Pro. Started in 1994, Wong's company, pobox.com is an e-mail forwarding service for clients who want a permanent e-mail address.
